Sixty players, including visitors from Montreal, Kingston, and Stratford, took part in the RA Squash Club’s Winter Open, January 24-27, in -20 degree temperatures (outside!!!). Alan Smith, a past Executive Director of Squash Canada, ran a well organized event, as he has done on so many previous occasions.
In the Men’s Open “A”, David Guest forced the teenaged winner, Dominic Wren, to the limit, winning two games in extra points but was unable to clinch the match. Dominic came out on top, 11-3, 10-12, 11-7, 12-14, 11-9 after 55 minutes of hard fought rallies. The play-off for 3rd spot was also exciting, with Patrick McDonnell-Alegre edging out Steve Oakey 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 9-11, 13-11.
In the Men’s “B”, youth was served again as the fast improving Felix Scholberg beat top seed Guy Laurin in 4 close games. Felix had previously beaten 2nd seed Carlos Loo and 3rd seed Jonny Kirwin on the way to the final. After a slow start, Jay Park took the “C” event in a 3-1 triumph over the RA Squash Club President, Debbie Witham.
Simon Gollish took the “D” title in 4 games over Mario Ibrahim,in a rematch of their earlier round robin encounter, when Mario had taken the first two games and narrowly lost the third. The Women’s “C/D” saw Annie Durocher won comfortably in three games over Deanne Cheer.
