Between June 13 and 15, 31 players competed for the A, B, C, D, and Junior titles at the Ottawa Athletic Club.
The “A” final was a humdinger between veteran David Guest and his more youthful opponent, Nick James, in a match which could have gone either way. After leading 9-4 in the first game, David lost it 13-15, and the next 5-11. After sage advice in between games, from his wife and his mother-in-law, both experienced competitors, he regained his poise. Hitting the ball very hard in between changes of pace and direction, he gradually forced his opponent into errors, winning the last three games 11-6,11-9, 11-9.
Sadly for local fans, Nick returns to Vancouver after a year in Ottawa, having demonstrated some high quality squash ( top 5 ODSA ranking, two ODSA ‘A’ level titles, and member of the OAC’s 2018/2019 Div. 1 winning league team). Good luck, Nick.
In the ‘A’ Consolation, Alex Gloor (Goodlife-Queensview) exhibited great tenacity and stamina, in beating up and coming junior Felix Scholberg (OAC) 3-2, for his third consecutive five-setter in the tournament.
