Results – 2020 RA Winter Open

Between January 30 and February 2, a total of 77 players participated in the six events of the RA Centre tournament, well organized by Assad Khan, who incidentally reached the semis of the “B” event.

In the Men’s Open final, Asser Ibrahim, the young Egyptian who is part of the powerful Carleton University team, lost the first game, but then proceeded to play a very steady game, using a stream of shots down the backhand wall, to set up a varied array of winners over Dominic Wren, winning 8-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-8. In the 3/4 playoff, Fernando Hernandez, always a welcome visitor from Montreal, had a comfortable 11-6, 11-7, 11-9 victory over Shady Elkamhawy, another member of the Carleton team.

The Men’s “A” event was won by the 4th seed, Moaz Khan, a visitor to Ottawa from Pakistan, who beat Nick Erdody 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 in the final, having survived two 5-set squeakers. In the first he came from a 2-1 game deficit against 14 year old Iman Shaheen (#1 GU15 in Canada) in the quarters, and then went on to beat Stephane Lussier 3-2 in the semis. In the 3/4 playoff Stephane outlasted James Wooderson 12-10, 11-6, 14-12. The Men’s “B” final featured two unseeded players, in Damian Lobato who won 11-4, 3-11, 11-6, 11-9 over University of Ottawa’s Abdelrahman Mohamad.

In the Men’s “C”, top seed Matt McGraw justified his seeding with a tight 8-11, 11-1, 11-8, 3-11, 11-9 win over Leonard Stein, while in the Men’s Round Robin “D” event, Christopher Rainville went unbeaten, with Jason Conte placing second. The Women’s C/D event was won by Antonieta Martinez, over Myriam Carle of the University of Ottawa, in a close three games, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8.
