The Ottawa Athletic Club’s Squash Open, which took place February 16-18, attracted 45 players. In the Div. “A” final, the top two seeds, David Guest and Matt Arkett who are both in their 40s, were very evenly matched, with Matt prevailing 8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9. David looked to have the match well in hand, having won the first game and leading 9-2 in the second, but Matt made a splendid recovery to win that game, and two of the next three, with his great court coverage and accurate short game.
The Div”B” final also produced another 5 setter with Dale Poirier outlasting Edouard Poitras 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-6. Tom Brown, of Carleton University, won the Div. “C” title by beating Marc Edmunds 11-3, 3-11, 11-6 and 11-8, while the winner of the “D” round robin event was Angie McCuaig of Urban Squash in Toronto.
