The RA Summer Open (Aug. 23-25) attracted entries from 10 different clubs, including two in Kingston. In the “A” event, Nick James, new-comer to Ottawa from Vancouver, beat Stephane Lussier in 4 thoroughly entertaining games, 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4. Stephane had beaten Nicolas Dupont in five on Friday night, and then upset top seed David Guest in a come-from-behind 5 setter on Saturday morning, so it was hardly surprising that Nick’s disciplined all court game, with many changes of pace, caused Stephane to show signs of tiredness in the 4th. When Nick was at McGill several years ago, it is worth noting that he was the losing finalist when Adrian Dudzicki won the Canadian University and College Championship in 2010.
In the “B” event, age was served, as Philippe Shillington, just turned 17, overcame veteran Nicolas Grenapin of the host club, in another thriller, 9-15, 15-10, 15-13, 15-12. The difference being slightly more energy at the end and some timely dead nicks. The “C” event was won by unseeded Jason Salares of Goodlife – Queensview over top seed Adham El-Shazly of Carleton Univ., by a score of 15-12, 15-11, 4-15, and 15-11, in another good match.
