Goodlife-Queensview Pulls Off a Highlight of Ottawa Season
Between November 1st and 4th, Heather Wallace, former World No. 3, 11 time Canadian champion, and pro at Queensview for more than 30 years, enthusiastically guided Queensview’s hosting of the PSA Women’s World Tour $11,000 event in Ottawa, plus other local events, and an excellent exhibition match.
On the last day, the paying audience of over 100 spectators was treated to a potpourri of top notch squash. It started with the Men’s A, where the 6′ 3″ Nick James beat Steve Oakey 3-0, using his long arms and legs to retrieve nearly everything Steve threw at him. Next was a thoroughly entertaining exhibition match, between Lucas Serme of France (currently ranked 33 on the world circuit), and Ottawa’s No. 1 ranked and ex PSA player, Maxym Leclair, won by Lucas 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, and notable for at least 10 dead nicks in the 50 points played.
Next up was the final of the main event, the PSA Women’s event between hometown favourite, Sam Cornett, and her Canadian teammate, Hollie Naughton, from Toronto. Ranked 40 and 37 respectively in the world, this was their first meeting in 3 years. Urged on by a partisan audience, Sam prevailed 11-5, 11-7, 11-8, in a match where Sam commanded the T and threw in a few nicks. This victory came only after she survived a 3-2 squeaker in her semi-final against the tournament’s 3rd seed Ho Tze-Lok of Hong Kong. The event started with 16 players representing 10 different countries, including four from Canada.
In other action, it was noteworthy that of the 4 men’s and 3 women’s events, five were won by women, with both Iman Shaheen and Alina d’Asti (now back in Ottawa permanently), winning the Men’s B and C finals 3-0. In the Women’s A, Lea Provencal played really well to outlast Tracey Sly 3-2 in a really tight match, while Joelle Vega, also of Montreal, overcame Katie Ritter of Queensview 3-1, in the Women’s B. The Men’s D and Women’s C titles went to Jason Salares and Kidi Denissio, both of the host club.
