Between October 18 and 20, La Sportheque hosted 42 players for two women’s and three men’s titles. Sixteen year old Max Shewchenko, an up and coming junior on the National scene, took the Men’s A/B event, 3 games to 0, over Simon Roy who, on this day, was unable to cope with Max’s power hitting and deft drops. Andrew Walker, freshly transferred from Toronto, took 3rd place in a workmanlike 12-10, 11-6, 11-9 victory over Nicolas Grenapin.
Thirteen year old Frederik Bemeur-Thorson showed great poise, belying his youth, to outfox and outlast a stronger and older opponent in Alain Beaulieu 15-4, 15-8, 12-15, 14-16, 15-12 for the ‘C’ title. In another tight match, Charles Fredette beat clubmate Anthony Delion 15-13, 15-9, 8-15, 10-15, 15-10, to win the ‘D’ event.
On the Women’s side, Alix Deffieux of Montreal prevailed in the Women’s A/B, without losing a game in the 4 player round robin, with Catherine Wood placing second. The Women’s C/D event provided great fireworks in the semi-finals where both Nicole Callender and Nadia Brault each had to play more than 125 points to secure their respective 3-2 victories. This appeared to affect Nadia more as she lost 3-15, 9-15, 3-15 to her younger opponent Nicole, in the final. In the battle for 3rd place Annie Durocher prevailed over Rosalie Jenkins 15-13, 15-8, 13-15, 15-12 in another entertaining match.
